Knowing When to Press Pause: The Importance of Getting Away to Relax and Renew

As a pastor, Executive Director of a non-profit, school board member, and—first and foremost—a husband and father, I find myself entering what feels like the busiest time of the year: December. The demands on my time and energy seem to multiply, and I’m keenly aware that by the end of the month, my gas tank is likely to be on empty.

In the midst of all this, it’s vital to recognize when it’s time to step back and intentionally get away to relax and renew. We often feel the pressure to keep pushing, especially when responsibilities pile up, but neglecting self-care can do more harm than good. Taking a pause isn’t a sign of weakness or failure; rather, it’s an act of wisdom and stewardship—not only of the work God has entrusted to us but also of our own wellbeing.

For me, this upcoming break will be a visit to see my friend, Pastor Bob Beeman, in Nashville. Spending time with friends, sharing laughter, and enjoying a change of scenery will be exactly what I need to recharge. It’s these moments of rest and renewal that prepare us to return home with fresh energy, renewed vision, and a spirit ready to serve even more effectively.

If you’re feeling the weight of your responsibilities, I encourage you to listen to your body and spirit. Give yourself permission to get away, even if just briefly. The quiet moments of rest can fuel the passion and perseverance required to finish strong.

Remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Taking that rest is essential—not just for us, but for those we lead, love, and serve.

So this December, as the busiest time approaches, may we all find the wisdom to pause, get away, and return renewed—ready to face the next chapter with strength and grace.
