Longing for Deeper Conversations: Reflections After Re-Watching "The Reluctant Convert: The Untold Story of C.S. Lewis
Last night, I found myself drawn once again to "The Reluctant Convert: The Untold Story of C.S. Lewis." I’ve watched it before, but this time, something new stirred in me. As I listened to Lewis recount his journey from atheism to faith, I was especially struck by the scenes where he engaged in deep, meaningful conversations with fellow Christian thinkers—friends like J.R.R. Tolkien and the other members of the Inklings.
Watching those moments, I realized what has been missing in my own walk as a Christian: deep, theologically rich conversations that challenge and inspire. Too often, our Sunday mornings are filled with surface-level talks—reminders to make good choices, encouragements to do this and avoid that. While these messages have their place, I find myself longing for more.
I want to go beyond the basics. I want to wrestle with the big questions, to explore doubts and mysteries, to discuss the nuances of faith with others who are just as hungry for depth. Lewis and his friends didn’t shy away from hard questions. They gathered, week after week, not just to socialize, but to challenge each other, to probe the depths of literature, philosophy, and theology. Their conversations shaped their faith—and, in turn, shaped the world through their writings.
As I watched Lewis walk and talk with Tolkien, I couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like to be part of such a group. To sit around a table with friends who aren’t afraid to ask, “What does this really mean?” or “How does this change the way we live?” To have a space where it’s safe to question, to doubt, and to grow.
I hope that one day, I’ll find or help create a discussion group like the Inklings—a place where faith isn’t just a set of rules or rituals, but a living, breathing journey we undertake together. Until then, I’ll keep searching, keep asking questions, and keep seeking out those who long for more than surface-level faith.
If you, too, are longing for deeper conversations, let’s connect. Maybe, just maybe, we can start something that would make even C.S. Lewis proud.
