Old Rockers vs. New Rockers
Hello fellow Christian rockers and metalheads,
As members of the Gen X tribe, we've been blessed to witness the evolution of Christian rock and metal from its infancy to the solid genre it is today. We've seen bands like Rez Band and Barnabas create a foundation for Christian rock, establishing a unique sound that's been a beacon for believers who also love to rock out.
But as we look around today, we see a new generation of Christian rock and metal bands emerging, and they don't sound the same as the bands we grew up with. The guitars are tuned differently, in some cases the drum beats are more complex, and the vocals might not be as raspy. And that's okay.
Let's remember, every generation brings its unique style and flavor to the music scene. Our generation was no different. We took the baton from the bands of the '70s and '80s and ran with it, creating our own sound that was distinct yet rooted in the foundation they laid. Now, it's time for us to pass the baton to the next generation.
That's not to say that we don't have some concerns. One of them is that these new bands don't seem to know much about the older bands. Knowing your history is important, especially in a genre as rich and nuanced as Christian rock and metal. Understanding the journey of this genre, from the days of Rez band and Barnabas, can provide a wealth of inspiration and guidance for these young bands.
On the flip side, we, the older generation, also have a role to play. We need to take up the mantle of mentorship and guide these young bands. We need to help them understand that being in a Christian rock or metal band is not just about the music. It's about the ministry. It's about using your platform to spread the word of God and make a positive impact on the world.
We've seen the generational clash play out in the secular music industry at events like the MTV VMA show, where old school rockers criticized yungblud for his tribute to Ozzy. We don't want to see that kind of discord in our community. Instead, let's lead by example. Let's show the world that in the Christian music industry, we respect and support each other, regardless of age or generation.
So, let's celebrate the new generation of Christian rock and metal. Let's listen to their music, appreciate their talent, and offer our guidance when needed. And who knows, we might even learn a thing or two from them.
Keep on rocking for Christ,
